The Racing Bug

Once the bug bites..

New Year of rd riding, mountain biking…not falling..

Falling off the bike is all part of it…so they say…I have seen some great falls on the mountain where my colleagues went rolling on the jeep track or falling off the single track..

These falls happen so quickly and so innocently…I recently saw someone in Tokai forest on their mountain bike take a tumble at full speed coming down a single track…i thought it was a great fall..he went down hard…came up quickly…nothing broken…contiued riding…

Reason why Im on these lines of falling, is that once again at this time of the year…everyone is out riding..and unfortunately the fatalities of falling or being knocked off the bike has increased..

Reason for more accidents is that there are many great races on the calendar in the Western Cape…from weekly events to the popular Attakwas mtb event in Jan, Argus Cycle tour in March and the great Cape Epic mtb event in March…8 days of great and tought mountain biking.

So at the moment, when I ride in the mornings, there are many cyclists on the road and mountain training very hard, looking lean and serious..and Im still in cruise mode..

Some things to consider when riding in the early hours of the morning:

Still keep left..just because its early morning does not mean you must ride in the middle of the road..there are many funny/drunk motorists out there..

Dont stop on the mountain to pick up the puff-adder..

Keep hydrated..

Beware of theives on the road..they know the prices of road/mtb bikes…so they will try and rob you..

Most importantly, enjoy the ride.
